Roller Coaster for Camera Gear

It’s been a roller coaster of a year for my camera gear due to supply chain issues. I pre-ordered the Nikon Z9 from B&H Photo three hours after it launched back on October 28th, 2021. I waited. And waited, and waited. Until is shipped, I used my old Nikon DSLR kit which consisted of a Nikon D850, D500 and a D610 as a backup body. I also had an assortment of F mount lenses that fulfilled my needs from 14mm through 500mm. I was very happy with the kit.

However, once I finally received the shipping notification about 5 months later in March, I immediately prepared my camera gear for a swift departure. I ended up selling all of my camera bodies to help pay for the Z9. I sold them to an outfit called MPB.com after another photographer recommended them to me. It was fast and easy, although the payout is probably 65% of what I could get if I sold my gear individually. But for me, the convenience of rapidity was worth it.

5 days after I received the Z9 the sensor shield fell apart. I could see the curtain of the shield became “wrinkled” and the top blade came loose. The shield also failed to retract and became stuck. I was able to physically push the shield down, but LiveView was disabled. The electronic viewfinder was still usable and able to take exposures, but the LCD remained black.

Needless to say I sent the Z9 back to B&H and started the RMA process. They immediately created a new order to replace my unit, but with how backordered the Z9 is, there’s no guarantee of when I’ll get mine. In the meantime I was forced to purchase another body so that I could at least have a camera to shoot with. I purchased a refurbished Nikon Z6 to get me through.
